Water Treatment System Safeguards Proactively against Legionella Bacteria

MEMPHIS, TENN., September 5, 2017 – Flozone Services Inc.’s Integrated Management System (IMS) helped the Birmingham Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Alabama save $243,628 on water, sewer, and electric costs while cutting water and sewer consumption by 8,009,643 gallons. Installed in 2013 for the nonchemical condenser water treatment system, the IMS solution also significantly reduced the annual carbon footprint over the formerly chemically treated system and eliminated hazards associated with transporting and maintaining the old chemical process.

The Birmingham VA Medical Center contracted with Flozone Services to take over HVAC treatment needs for cooling towers and closed loops. The E3 Sentinel monitoring system was installed in conjunction with the IMS. This program provides optimal water quality to ensure maximum heat transfer within the HVAC condenser application. The VA Medical Center also uses the IMS proactively as a safeguard against Legionella bacteria contamination in its cooling towers. Legionella bacteria can cause a type of atypical pneumonia called Legionnaire’s Disease.

“We are pleased with the performance of Flozone Services’ technology,” said VA Medical Center energy manager James Zellander. “It drove significant cost savings and helped us improve system performance and safety.”

Results from 2016 included:

  • Energy savings: $26,423.
  • kW consumption reduced: 377,426 kW.
  • kWH demand reduced: 544 kW.
  • Water and Sewer savings: $217,205.
  • Water and Sewer consumption reduced: 8,009,643 gallons.
  • Total Water, Sewer and Electric savings: $243,628.
  • Eliminated condenser water chemicals: 2,826 gallons.
  • Excellent corrosion rates are verified by corrosion coupon analysis by a third party.
  • Chiller efficiency increased from 85% to greater than 95%.

Annual inspections of chillers revealed clean tubes that did not need brushing and, due to the elimination of the previously-used harsh chemicals, extended equipment life which helps drive increased long-term savings.
